Learn About Meal Programs

Meal programs are designed to meet the nutritional needs of older adults and people with disabilities who have difficulty preparing meals on their own.

What are meal programs?
Meal programs either deliver meals to individual homes or serve meals in a group setting within the community. Meals are included as part of the Nutrition programs at Area Agencies on Aging where registered dietitians plan or review menus. Other meal settings include churches, community centers, and civic organizations. There are also businesses that offer food delivery services designed to meet the needs of older adults and people with disabilities. For instance, restaurants, private meal services, and grocery stores often provide delivery for little or no cost other than that of the food itself.

What should I look for in a meal program?
Ask whether a program can provide the meals you need, when you need them, and where you need them. Also, make sure that the program can serve your special dietary needs. Special dietary needs may mean meals that meet medical or religious criteria. If you need liquid or chopped meals, check on this, too.

How do I pay for a meal program?
Most meal programs are inexpensive or free and are available to people of any income level. Some meal providers ask for a suggested donation. Many meal programs are supported with federal, state, or local funds. Others are sponsored by religious organizations or community groups.
